Four Benefits Of Short Term Rentals Over Hotel Or Motel Stays

When my youngest child moved out, I was left living in a large home by myself. Weekend visits from the grandchildren only filled the space part of the time. The home became more of a burden as each day passed. It was not until I was working with my real estate agent to sell my home and find a smaller home did I realize that there were so many others in the same position. I created this blog to help other empty nesters explore their options for downsizing and to provide guidance on finding a new home that fits in more with their lifestyle.

If you're going to be staying in an area for a few weeks or a few months, you might want to consider a short term rental. A short term rental is generally any rental under three months, though even rentals between three to six months may be considered short term. In general, a short term rental will be slightly more expensive than a standard rental but less expensive than a hotel or other transitory living situation.

1. Privacy

Some people love the convenience of maid service -- but many people just want to be left alone, especially when they're going to be staying in a place for weeks or months. With a short term rental, you have just as much privacy as renting any apartment or home. You don't need to worry about hanging a "do not disturb" sign, and you won't be bumping into other people in your halls.

2. Cost

Often, it's much less expensive to rent a short term apartment than a hotel or a motel, as you're paying for full weeks or full months instead of paying by the night. In a short term apartment or house, you usually won't be paying for utilities, so the extraneous costs are comparable. The only downside is that you do need to pay a deposit -- but this deposit will be returned to you at the end of your stay.

3. Convenience

Do you enjoy cooking at home? Or maybe just relaxing with an ordinary cable subscription, rather than a hotel-based subscription? There are conveniences available in a short term rental that aren't available in a hotel and motel, such as a full kitchen and a laundry room that you can use on demand. You will also have your own parking stall and won't need to deal with front desk staff or other issues as you come "home" at the end of the day.

4. Comfort

Through a short term rental, you can rent a home rather than an apartment or a condo. Additionally, short term rentals are often much larger than motels and hotels. You can choose a short term rental that is essentially a furnished apartment or a furnished home.

How do you find a short term rental? The best way is to go through a property management company rather than trying to find one on your own. Due to the time involved and the need to find a reputable landlord easily, a property management company is almost always more effective.
