When Looking For a New Home, Pay Attention to the Neighborhood Too

When my youngest child moved out, I was left living in a large home by myself. Weekend visits from the grandchildren only filled the space part of the time. The home became more of a burden as each day passed. It was not until I was working with my real estate agent to sell my home and find a smaller home did I realize that there were so many others in the same position. I created this blog to help other empty nesters explore their options for downsizing and to provide guidance on finding a new home that fits in more with their lifestyle.

When Looking For a New Home, Pay Attention to the Neighborhood Too

When purchasing a home, it makes sense to focus most of your attention on the home itself. After all, it is likely an investment of hundreds of thousands of dollars, so you want to make sure you love it. However, the neighborhood the home is located in is equally important, as a great neighborhood choice can make your house a home, and a bad choice can make it a living nightmare.

Playmates

It is always good when there are families in the neighborhood who have children that are around the same age as your child. Sure, just because two children are the same age does not mean they will be the best of friends, but it does often mean that your child will have some built-in playmates. Having other children around can make your child feel more comfortable and happier in their new home.

After-Hours Activity

Drive by the home at night and on the weekend to get an idea of the after-hours activity. Most neighborhoods are calm and inviting during the day. The real story is told at night when everyone is home and active. Loud music, parties, or heavy traffic are just some things to look for. For a family, a new home should feel inviting, safe, and relaxing day or night, so make sure the neighbors fit into this goal.

Convenience Amenities

You can get just about any item delivered to your home, but there are still those instances when you need to quickly run to the grocery store for an item. Make sure the area surrounding the home you are considering has many of the amenities you need nearby. In addition to a grocery store, a variety of restaurants, shopping options, and a pharmacy are just some things to look for.

School District Data

If you are looking for a new home and you have school-aged children, you should also pay attention to the school district data in the area. Schools often make their test scores, demographics, curriculum details, and extracurricular activity options viewable for the public. Since the school a child attends has a large impact on their education journey, try to look for homes in school districts that are equipped to meet your child's educational needs. A real estate agent can help with this step.

As you search for a single-family home, make sure you keep these factors in mind as you explore the neighborhood.
